Caretaker Mode
Caretaker arrangements in election periods
The amendments to the Act introduced election caretaker arrangements applicable to all local government during the election period. The reforms:
- Prohibit local government from publishing or distributing electoral matter unless it contains only information about the election process during the election period.
- Prohibit a council from making certain major policy decisions during the election period.
- Require the council to include caretaker procedures in the code of conduct.
The caretaker provisions operate during the ‘election period’ that is defined under the Local Government Act as commencing from when nominations close and continuing until election day (32 days).
